Saving in Works/Word and Opening in Writer
If you are working in Microsoft Works/Word and need to bring the file to school and open in OpenOffice Writer, use this procedure to save your document.
The problem: The *.wps or *.docx extension on the MS Works/Word file is not recognized by OpenOffice Writer.
The fix:
Save your document as an "doc" file. (*.doc extension)
How to do this:
When ready to save your work, go to File - Save As:
Three steps:
- At the top of the "Save as" dialogue box choose the location to save the file.
- At the bottom of the dialogue box choose a name for the file.
- Also, at the bottom of the dialogue box choose the save as type (file type). If you choose "doc" then OpenOffice Writer should recognize it here at school.
NOTE: doc might be listed as an older WORD DOCUMENT in the Save As type dialogue box.
*Another format that might be acceptable is "rtf", Rich Text Format, if .doc is not available.
