To
create an outline-style numbered list
An outline numbered list shows list items at different levels rather than indented at one level. By typing topics and subtopics in an outline-style numbered list, you can create a hierarchical structure for your document. The text is not formatted with the built-in heading styles.
Example of an outline-style numbered list
I. The Solar System
A. Mercury
1. Geology
2. Atmosphere
Outline numbered lists (can have up to nine levels)
- On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, and then click the Outline Numbered tab.
- Click a list format that does not contain the text "Heading 1", and then click OK.
- Type the list, pressing ENTER after each item.
- To move an outline numbered item to the appropriate numbering level, do one of the following on the Formatting toolbar:
To demote the item to a lower numbering level, click anywhere in the item, and click Increase Indent
. (You can also use the tab key to demote the item.)
To promote the item to a higher numbering level, click anywhere in the item, and click Decrease Indent
. (You can also use the shift-tab key to promote the item.)
Modify outline numbering formats (I, A, a, 1, i, etc.)
- Click the heading you want to modify.
- On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, and then click the Outline Numbered tab.
- Click the heading format you want to modify.
- Click Customize.
- In the Level or the Preview box, click the heading level you want to modify.
- Change the formatting options you want.
For Help on an option, click the question mark and then click the option.
Repeat this procedure for each heading level you want to change.
